As a student of Brookes, Emma studied towards the BSc (Hons) Degree in Hotel and Catering Management and enjoyed the “choice of courses” offered as well as the “variety of subjects, both practical and academic”.
After graduating from Brookes what were the next steps for your career and where are you working now?
“I graduated from Oxford Brookes in 1995 with a BSc (Hons) Degree in Hotel and Catering Management, and was offered one of 15 positions on 'The Swallow Hotel Graduate Training Program'. After working in Hotels in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Durham I was promoted to Assistant Manager in charge of the Liquor operation in the Swallow Hotel Northampton”.
Emma’s experiences with Swallow fed an ambition to own her own business and in 1998 this became a reality as she opened a hot food and sandwich shop in Birmingham. The success of the shop was marked very quickly: “within the first year of trading I was a runner up in the "Young Entrepreneur of the Year" run by Business Enterprise Link”. More recently, Emma has focussed her attention on writing. In March 2012 she released her first cookery book entitled "Quick and Easy Homemade Meals". The mantra of the book being that flavour rich, fresh food need not involve hours spent slaving over a stove! The book has been a great success,“it appeared in Prize Magazine, received a positive review in "The Burton Mail", and has featured twice in "Gem Magazine" which is delivered to homes within the Birmingham area…it was also mentioned on a breakfast show on Northern Radio”. The book has also prompted Emma to write a second cookery book, particularly designed for students.
What achievements are you most proud of since graduating?
Fulfilling the following ambitions:
- To own my own Business
- Being a finalist in the "Young Entrepreneur of the Year"
- Having my first cookery book published before I was 40!
In what way is remaining connected to your alumni network important to you?
It is very important as “it assists in promoting achievements of past students which will hopefully encourage under graduates to reach their potential and fulfil their ambitions”. Emma has stayed in touch with Brookes over the years, coming back in 1999 to speak with students during a Bacchus Networking event, sharing her career path to date and her personal secrets to running a successful business.
