As a Marketing Manager, Jayne is proof that your degree doesn’t restrict you to working in one specific area. From a BSc in Hotel and Catering Management, Jayne made the move into a different field of work- marketing.
What did you think of the course while studying here?
“I thought it was great because the modular format meant that you could study other subjects which interested you outside of the core subjects. It also involved a 12 month placement which gave me commercial context and invaluable life experience. I was also able to focus on marketing in my final year and through my dissertation and have continued down that route ever since”.
What are the best bits of studying at Brookes?
“I have always been quite sporty so having the opportunity to row was fantastic; some of my flat mates thought we were mad going out on the river at 7am on a frosty winter morning but it was amazing. Winning a few regattas and head of the river races also helped!”
What advice do you have for others?
“Going to University isn’t just about the course that you study but all the other opportunities that you get to develop as a person. You need to think about whether the place fits your own personal ambitions both academically and in relation to extra-curricular activities”.
After graduating from Brookes what were the next steps for your career and where are you working now?
“After graduating I worked for a couple of well-known marketing communications agencies: Saatchi & Saatchi and McCann Erikson in both Account Director and Business Development Director roles. I have also worked client side in Marketing Management roles with a number of well-known organisations, including Keele University and Vimto Soft Drinks. I am now working for ResponseTap, a young dynamic technology company heading up their marketing department”.
Did your career turn out how you expected it to be?
“I don’t really know what I expected and I don’t suppose any one really does. I know I don’t regret anything I have done as I believe that each role I have done has enabled me build my skills and experience and provided me with extensive knowledge, which helps me make a more valuable contribution to the organisation I work with”.
What achievements are you most proud of since graduating?
“I am proud of the contributions I have made to the various organisations I have work for and worked with as these have made them more effective, more profitable and has resulted in growth”.
How has the course you studied at Oxford Brookes helped you in your career?
“Sadly, it made me realise that I didn’t want to go into catering. However, the fact that it was business based meant it focused on the three main areas: HR, finance and marketing thus giving me the grounding I needed to develop in my chosen discipline”.
In what way is remaining connected to your alumni network important to you?
“Finding out about what other people are doing with their lives, sharing ideas with people who are working in similar types of role or industry sector and for the social aspects”.
