Despite having only visited Oxford Brookes once, alumnus Syed Kazmi 02’ explained how much a part of the family he felt whilst studying towards his Bsc. (Hons) in Advanced Accounting: “Oxford Brookes was the only school where I felt like part of a family after completing rigorous ACCA exams”. Like many of our distance learning students, Syed worked towards his degree thousands of miles away from the University town. Nevertheless, the reputation of Oxford Brookes has travelled with him. Syed described that “being associated with an academic institution with a long and rich history dating back to 1865 is a great asset to your career.”
How has the course you studied at Oxford Brookes helped you in your career?
“After moving to the US, I received great recognition by the foreign education evaluation agencies on my degree from Oxford Brookes. Later, my association with the school gave me the opportunity to prove my abilities in the job market”
Syed’s career to date has been versatile and very successful. After graduating, Syed moved to the US and started a business under the name of ‘BRR Limited’ with his father. The company facilitates the furniture industry with vinyl-based solutions. The company took advantage of the housing boom in the US and as a result, Syed and his father opened three regional offices.
After a year with ‘BRR limited’ Syed joined the audit firm Rothstein, Kass & Company. He then transferred his skills into industry by joining a prestigious hedge fund company ‘Pennant Capital Management’ as a Financial Controller. Within his role, Syed is responsible for fund’s trading operations, accuracy of accounting records, regulatory and investor reporting. As a highly motivated individual, Syed has managed to work a full time job whist studying towards the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Level 2 Exam and is currently building up to the Level 3 Exam.
What achievements are you most proud of since graduating?
“I have always enjoyed challenging tasks at work and erecting 42 feet lamination and a coating line at BRR Limited required a good level of engineering. Contrary to my background, I am proud of successfully starting a new business and learning problem-solving skills as an entrepreneur.”
Syed’s is one clear example of the benefits that can be gained through achieving a qualification from Oxford Brookes University. Combined with hard work and steely determination, Syed has proved himself within industry as a truly hardworking, entrepreneur.
